What to do When the Police Pull You Over with a Concealed Carry Permit

Police Car

It is always good to know the laws in your area regarding gun use and ownership. In the state of Ohio, there are laws governing what you must do if you are pulled over with a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

I have laid them out in simplified terms so they are easily understandable. Please note that this advice applies only if you have your weapon on your person or in your vehicle.

The Law

If pulled over with CCW in the state of Ohio you must:

– Immediately tell the officer that you have a concealed carry permit and where your weapon(s) are on your person or in the vehicle. If you are a passenger, the driver must inform the officer that you have a permit.

– Ask the Officer if he has any instructions for you.

– The officer will more than likely ask for your permit card. Make sure you carry it with you at all times.

– Stay in the vehicle from the time the officer arrives until he leaves unless ordered otherwise by the officer.

– Keep your hands in plain sight from the time the officer arrives until she leaves unless ordered otherwise by the officer.

– Avoid touching the gun(s) with your hands or fingers from the time the officer arrives until he leaves unless ordered otherwise by the officer. As an additional note I’ll add here, if you are directed to touch your weapon in some way by the officer, MOVE SLOWLY.

– Follow any and all orders given to you by the officer. The law specifically adds here “including keeping your hands in plain sight.”

My Suggestion

I would suggest keeping your hands on the steering wheel at all times unless you are directed to do something by the officer. Again, if you are ordered to do something, do it slowly.

These are the laws that apply in Ohio. Check the laws in your state to see what applies to you. I hope this helps.

Question

What do you think about these rules?  Are the laws in your state different?
