We’ve Got the Second Amendment All Wrong

Have you ever had someone judge you inaccurately? Maybe people think you are a snob, when in reality you are really shy. Perhaps you appear to be showing off, but you really just love what you are doing.

Your response would be something like, “Wait, you’ve got me all wrong!” Basically you’re saying that you’ve been misunderstood and you’d like to set the record straight.

The Second Amendment

I think the Second Amendment has been saying the same thing lately. “You’ve got me all wrong here.” In the midst of this flurry of gun control activity there seems to be some confusion as to what the Second Amendment is really all about.

I’ve heard / read that, “No one needs a “military style assault rifle” or a 30 round magazine to defend their home from trespassers”. I’m not sure I totally agree with that statement at face value, but there is another argument being made here.

It basically goes like this: Since we don’t need that much firepower for self-defense, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines doesn’t infringe upon our Second Amendment rights. This argument immediately assumes that the Second Amendment is about self-defense.

The fact of the matter is that the Second Amendment is really about internal “nation-defense.” This amendment was brilliantly put into our constitution as a protection against a federal government taking too much power for themselves. A power grab of this nature would transform the federal government from the administrator of a free democracy to the enforcer of a tyranny.

As long as the populace has weapons the federal government must pause. Federal leaders must stop and think of the millions of guns and gun owners in America before stealing our freedoms from us for their own gain.

Our Leaders

People in leadership seem to miss this crucial fact. They seem oblivious to it… or maybe not. I sometimes wonder if they actually argue the self-defense angle to get our attention off of the whole stop a tyrant thing.

I also notice that there are pro-gun leaders who should know the real reason for the existence of the Second Amendment better than I do. For some reason they don’t want to talk about it.

I would suggest that it is unpopular to mention this. The real reason the Second Amendment was put into the constitution is to prevent a tyrant(s) from taking over power and destroying the basic principles of our nation. I’ve decided to talk openly about it and set the record straight.

“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” ~ George Washington

Do you agree that the Second Amendment is more about protecting our nation from tyranny than about self-defense?
