Skeet Shooting with the Uncles

Skeet

Some of us have defining moments. They are those events that seem to help direct the course of our lives. I have several of those. One of those moments was a day of skeet shooting with my Dad and Uncles.

Skeet Shooting

Shooting skeet (which is technically different than trap shooting) is an interesting sport. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, A little clay frisbee called a pigeon is either thrown by hand with a tool, or thrown by a machine. It’s supposed to imitate the flight of a bird across your field of vision.

The Day

When I was in my early teens (I’m guessing 15) my dad took me out to an uncle’s farm to shoot some skeet. All his brothers were there too. It was my first experience. I was used to stationary targets. Moving targets were a whole new ball game.

We used a hand held spring assisted thrower. Of course the thrower would wait for the right word. “Pull!” and the clay pigeon was flying through the air.

Success

Now it was cool that my adult male relatives thought I was old enough to take part in the event, but what really made it special was something else. I was surprised by how well I did and so were my Dad and uncles. I hit the first one, straight off and hit a majority after that. It was all in how you “lead” the target.

Result

The exhilaration I felt and the praise I received cemented it for me. I was realizing that I loved to shoot. It was in my blood.

After that experience, I’ve shot skeet only a handful of times, but I’ll never forget that day.

Question

Do you have any stories about a significant day of shooting that was a defining moment for you?
